Article 94

License plates

1. No motor vehicle, trailer, moped, or horse-drawn vehicle to be driven anywhere in the country unless it bears legally issued license plates. The license plates issued are reflective.

2. It is prohibited, for any reason, to replace the license plates specified in paragraph 1 with others that have not been legally issued, or to alter them in any way—such as by cutting, changing their shape or letters, or bending the plate— or the transfer of a license plate from one vehicle to another, or the manufacture of such plates by anyone other than the person designated under the provisions of this law and in a manner other than prescribed, as well as the sale, purchase, and use of such license plates. Violators of this provision and those who submit false information to obtain replacement license plates with the intent to use them illegally shall be punished by imprisonment for up to one (1) year.

3. The offense committed by a person who operates a motor vehicle that does not have both (2) legally issued license plates affixed, as well as for anyone who operates a vehicle of another category that is not equipped with standard license plates, is classified as Category E3-B. The same category also applies to the offense committed by a person driving a road vehicle whose license plates are not, for any reason, clearly visible or recognizable by technical devices used to detect violations, or who covers them with non-reflective material. For the relevant violation concerning trucks, the special provisions of Law 3446/2006 (A’ 49) apply. In addition to the administrative penalties provided for herein, anyone caught operating a vehicle whose license plates have been removed due to violations of this law shall be punished by imprisonment for up to one (1) year and a fine of at least two thousand (2,000) euros, provided that the act is not punishable by a more severe penalty under another provision.
