Article 84

General Provisions on Lighting

1. The lights of a motor vehicle or trailer, with the exception of turn signals and emergency lights, must not flash or vary in intensity. As an exception, this is permitted for lights used to identify vehicles or combinations of vehicles, such as emergency vehicles, convoys of vehicles, large vehicles, and vehicles used for road construction or maintenance, to which general traffic rules do not apply or whose presence on the road requires other road users to take special precautions.

2. A combination of two (2) or more lights—whether identical or not—that perform the same function and are the same color is considered to constitute a single (1) light, if the projections of their illuminating surfaces, in a transverse vertical plane, occupy at least fifty percent (50%) of the area of the smallest rectangle that encloses the projections of those illuminating surfaces.

3. A single strip-shaped lighting surface is considered to consist of two (2) or an even number of lights if it is mounted symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle, extends no more than forty centimeters (0.40 m) from the outermost edge of the vehicle, and is at least eighty centimeters (0.80 m) long. The illumination of such a surface shall be provided by at least two (2) light sources located as close as possible to its edges. The above-mentioned illuminating surface may consist of a number of elements, which are arranged such that the projections of the illuminating surfaces of the various elements onto a transverse vertical plane occupy at least fifty percent (50%) of the area of the smallest rectangle that circumscribes these projections of the illuminating surfaces.

4. Vehicle lights that perform the same function and shine in the same direction must be the same color. Lights and reflectors, in even numbers, are mounted symmetrically with respect to the vehicle’s longitudinal centerline, except for vehicles with an asymmetrical exterior shape. The intensity of the lights in each pair is the same. The lights must not be obscured by any objects and must be kept clean.

5. Subject to the other provisions of this Chapter, lights of various types and reflectors may be combined or incorporated into the same device.

6. It is prohibited to add any lighting or reflective devices other than those specified in Article 4, regarding definitions.

7. Violations of this provision are classified under Category E1-A.
