Article 57

Dimensions and Weights

1. Vehicles whose dimensions, weight, load, and axle loads exceed the specified maximum limits for each case, as defined in paragraph 18 of Article 112, may be driven only with a special permit, which may be issued by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation or by authorities authorized by him. This permit specifies restrictions on the operation of these vehicles, relating in particular to transit routes, operating hours, the maximum permitted speed, and the required road safety measures.

2. The width of trailers and vehicle combinations does not include the following transverse projection:

(a) the tires near their point of contact with the ground and the connections of their pressure gauges,

(b) anti-skid devices fitted to the wheels,

(c) the driver’s side mirrors, when designed to move both forward and backward with moderate pressure, so that they do not protrude beyond the maximum permitted width,

(d) the side turn signals and their indicator lights,

(e) customs seals, which are affixed to the cargo, and the devices used to secure and protect such seals.

3. The ends of the axles and the central parts of the wheels (hubs) of road vehicles must not protrude beyond the outer contour of the vehicle, with the exception of construction machinery, agricultural machinery, and animal-drawn vehicles that lack mudguards (fenders) or have a body that does not extend beyond the wheels, and for which the ends of the axles and the central parts of the wheels are permitted to protrude beyond the level of the wheel rims by up to twenty-five (25) centimeters.

4. A vehicle operating in violation of this provision shall be impounded by the competent law enforcement officer who detected the violation, in accordance with Article 50, regarding the impoundment of vehicles.

5. Violations of paragraphs 2 through 4 are classified as Category E2-B, except for trucks, to which Law 3446/2006 (A’ 49), concerning the organization and operation of vehicle traffic control authorities and regulations for passenger transportation.
