Article 53

Street Races

1. Races involving motorized vehicles, animals, bicycles, automobiles, four-wheeled vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds on roads and in areas covered by this law may be held only with the appropriate permit.

2. The license referred to in paragraph 1 is granted:

(a) For races involving motor vehicles and animals, by the local police departments or traffic police departments,

(b) for bicycle races, similarly, in accordance with the provisions of subparagraph (a), following a prior application by the interested parties and the opinion of the Hellenic Cycling Federation or the Hellenic Triathlon Federation, as applicable,

(c) for all motorcycle, moped, and four-wheeled vehicle races organized by clubs, which are members of the specially recognized sports federation, or by the federation itself, by the competent body of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, or by authorities authorized by it, following the approval of the Motorcycle Sports Federation or the legal entity that legally represents the sport within the International Motorcycling Federation, in accordance with the safety rules established by the International Motorcycling Federation. Specifically for races organized by the Motorcycle Sports Federation, notification to the competent authorities is required,

(d) for all national automobile races, karting events, and races involving vintage cars of historical interest, by the competent body of the Ministry of Citizen Protection or the authorities authorized by it, following the consent of the Motor Sports Federation, recognized by the General Secretariat of Sports.

For all international automobile, kart, and vintage car races of historical interest listed in the race calendar of the International Automobile Federation, by the competent body of the Ministry of Citizen Protection or the authorities authorized by it, following the consent of the legal entity that legally represents the sport within the International Automobile Federation or the sports federation recognized by the General Secretariat of Sportsfor motorsports, in accordance with the safety regulations established by the International Automobile Federation,

(e) for other events organized by associations of vintage motor vehicles of historical interest (cars or motorcycles) by the competent body of the Ministry of Citizen Protection or the authorities authorized by it, following the consent of the legal entity that legally represents the aforementioned organizations in the International Federation of Historic Vehicles, the International Automobile Federation, or the International Motorcycle Federation.

Applications from interested parties regarding items (c), (d), and (e) must be submitted to the aforementioned sports federations (automobile or motorcycle) or to the legal entities that legally represent the sport in Greece—whether to the International Automobile Federation, the International Motorcycling Federation, or the International Federation, and is forwarded to the competent body of the Ministry of Citizen Protection or to the authorities authorized by it, together with their required approval, so that the relevant permit may be issued.

3. In the case of go-karts, a car driver’s license or a go-kart racing license of any category, issued by an organization recognized by the General Secretariat, is required

Sports federation for motorsports or,regarding international karting competitions, by the legal entity that legally represents the sport within the International Automobile Federation. The safety measures provided for in the International Karting Regulations, for both drivers and spectators, shall apply accordingly.

4. Violations of this provision fall under Category E4 and are punishable as a separate offense by an administrative fine of fifty thousand (50,000) euros and a ban on organizing competitions for a period of up to five (5) years from the date of the violation.
