Specific Obligations of Drivers and Pedestrians Toward Law Enforcement Officers and School Crossing Guards

1. Drivers and pedestrians are required to obey the stop signal given by uniformed police officers.

2. When summoned by these authorities, vehicle drivers are required to provide all information relevant to the operation of their vehicle.

3. To ensure the road safety of students who walk to and from school, school crossing guards may be used.

The school crossing guard directs traffic at a specific point on the road (not at an intersection), stopping the flow of vehicles at a section of the road where there is a marked crosswalk. For this purpose, he is equipped with a portable STOP sign, which he holds appropriately above the road surface. This crossing guard wears a reflective vest that meets the specifications of the corresponding vest used by the Hellenic Police; however, instead of police insignia, it bears the inscription “school crossing guard.”

School crossing guards are appointed by the school principal; may be selected from among the school staff or nominated by the relevant parents’ and guardians’ association, and are provided with equipment by the school.

4. A violation of paragraphs 1 and 3, and the offense of a person who refuses to present any information relevant to the operation of their vehicle, falls under Category E3-B and is punishable by imprisonment for up to one (1) year. The same category also applies to a vehicle driver who behaves, through actions or words, insulting or threatening toward traffic enforcement officers or who obstructs their work while they are issuing citations for violations of this Code, or who provides false identification information orregarding the operation of their vehicle.
