Article 24
Speed limits, authority to set them, enforcement of compliance, categories of violations, and penalties for exceeding speed limits, inadequate equipment in commercial vehicles and tampering with such equipment, possession of devices designed to interfere with speed control, and improper use of Light Electric Personal Vehicles
1. The maximum speed limit within residential areas is set at thirty (30) kilometers per hour. On one-way streets with at least two (2) traffic lanes, separated by longitudinal markings, and on two-way streets with at least two (2) lanes in each direction, separated by longitudinal markings, and on two-way roads with a median strip, the maximum speed limit is set at fifty (50) kilometers per hour. The speed limits set forth herein apply, unless otherwise specified by special signage, in accordance with the provisions of subparagraph (c) of paragraph 7 of Article 112, concerning enabling provisions.
2. Outside residential areas, the maximum speed limits for the various categories of motor vehicles and combinations thereof are set forth in the table below:

3. On unpaved roads outside residential areas, the maximum speed limit is set at forty (40) kilometers per hour, unless otherwise indicated by special signage.
4. For trucks used to transport passengers, the maximum speed limit is set at thirty (30) kilometers per hour within residential areas and fifty (50) kilometers per hour outside of them.
5. For mopeds, the maximum permitted speed is set at forty-five (45) kilometers per hour, subject to the provisions of paragraph 1. For agricultural and construction machinery, the maximum permitted speed is set at forty (40) kilometers per hour, subject to the provisions of paragraph 1. In particular, if the agricultural machinery, construction machinery, or their trailers are not equipped with pneumatic tires, the maximum permitted speed is set at fifteen (15) kilometers per hour.
6. For E.P.H.O. vehicles, the maximum speed limit is set at twenty-five (25) kilometers per hour. EPHOs are prohibited from traveling on roads where the maximum speed limit for motor vehicles exceeds fifty (50) kilometers per hour.
7. On trucks, their trailers, and buses, the following must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle body, in black letters fifteen (15) centimeters high on a white circular background, the number of kilometers per hour representing their maximum permitted speed.
8. The speed of road vehicles may be monitored by the competent police authorities using special electronic devices or other technical means.
9. (a) Subject to subparagraph (b), a violation involving exceeding the speed limit:
(aa) up to twenty (20) kilometers per hour, it is classified in category E2-A,
(ab) between twenty (20) kilometers per hour and thirty (30) kilometers per hour, it is classified in category E2-B,
(ag) speeds exceeding thirty (30) kilometers per hour up to and including fifty (50) kilometers per hour are classified in category E3-B.
(b) Subject to subparagraphs (c) and (d), the following traffic violations are classified under category E3-B:
(ba) on highways where the speed limit exceeds one hundred fifty (150) kilometers per hour,
(bb) on expressways with a speed limit exceeding one hundred thirty (130) kilometers per hour,
(b) on the rest of the road network at speeds exceeding one hundred twenty (120) kilometers per hour.
(c) Subject to subparagraph (d), an offense involving exceeding the speed limit by more than fifty (50) kilometers per hour is classified as Category E4, and the offender is subject to an administrative fine of seven hundred (700) euros and the administrative measure of on-the-spot suspension of their driver’s license for sixty (60) days.
d) Driving at a speed exceeding two hundred (200) kilometers per hour is classified as Category E4, and the passenger is subject to an administrative fine of two thousand (2,000) euros and the administrative measure of on-the-spot revocation of the driver’s license for one (1) year.
(e) The offense of driving at a speed below the minimum speed limit and the violation of paragraph 7 are classified under Category E1-A.
10. Violation of the requirement to put a motor vehicle into service and to drive it without it being equipped with the devices specified in subparagraph (f) of paragraph 7 of Article 112, as well as the offense of failing to install the tachograph sheet or other recording system, are classified in category E3-B. Violations involving any tampering with the mechanism of the aforementioned device, with the intent of rendering it inoperative or altering the recorded data. If the driver disputes the violation, the vehicle is transported, under police escort, to the inspection office of the relevant Regional Unit. Law 3446/2006 (A’49) applies to the above violations involving trucks.
11. The offense of driving a motor vehicle equipped with devices designed to detect speed measurement devices, as well as driving a motor vehicle equipped with devices designed to interfere with speed measurement devices, is classified under category E3-B.
12. Specifically regarding the E.P.H.O.:
(a) driving in violation of the first sentence of paragraph 6:
(aa) with a speed of up to thirty-five (35) kilometers per hour, it is classified in category E1-A, and its registration is classified in category E2-A,
(ab) if its speed exceeds thirty-five (35) kilometers per hour, it is classified in category E2-A, and its registration is classified in category E3-A,
(b) Driving in violation of the second sentence of paragraph 6 is classified as Category E1-A.
