Article 9

Traffic lights for vehicle traffic

1. Drivers of road vehicles must comply with the following traffic signal indications, unless a traffic officer directs traffic otherwise: a) a steady green circular light:

The driver proceeds straight ahead or turns right or left, unless another signal or sign prohibits proceeding straight ahead or turning. Even if the traffic light is green, a driver proceeding straight ahead must yield the right of way to another vehicle or pedestrian that is still moving from the previous signal, whereas if the driver is turning, they must yield the right of way to pedestrians who are moving on the street they are about to enter; b) a steady red circular light:

The driver must stop before the designated stop line or, if there is no such line, at a sufficient distance from the traffic signal so that the signal is clearly visible to him, and remains stopped until the green light comes on. The driver shall not enter the intersection or drive over pedestrian crossings if the traffic signal is located in the middle or on the opposite side of the intersection, c) a steady yellow circular light:

The driver must stop, as in subparagraph (b), unless he is so close to the traffic signal that he cannot stop safely, (d) a single or double yellow circular light that flashes:

The driver slows down, proceeds with extreme caution, and yields to pedestrians and other vehicles,

e) a single red light that flashes (blinks), in a circular pattern or as a pair alternating on the same mast, at the same height, and facing the same direction, indicating a high level of danger:

The driver brings the vehicle to a stop, as in subparagraph (b). This signaling is used only at grade-level railroad crossings, at access points to movable bridges or car ferry docks, when fire trucks enter the road or when aircraft are approaching that will fly at a low altitude over the road,

(f) a green light in the form of one or more arrows:

The driver may proceed only in the direction indicated by the arrow or arrows. An arrow pointing upward indicates that the driver must proceed straight ahead.

(g) a three-color traffic signal system that includes one (1) or more additional green arrows: The driver may proceed in the direction indicated by the arrow or arrows, regardless of the color of the traffic signal at that moment, provided they have already entered the traffic lane designated for vehicles traveling in the direction indicated by the arrow or arrows.

A driver who is in the traffic lane designated for vehicles traveling in the direction of the arrow is moving in that direction, unless stopping does not obstruct the movement of vehicles behind him in the same lane.

The driver may proceed in the direction indicated by the arrow only if traffic conditions on the road they are about to enter permit it and pedestrians are not endangered,

(h) a red arrow-shaped light:

The driver is prohibited from proceeding in the direction indicated by the arrow and must stop the vehicle, as in subparagraph (b).

(i) a yellow arrow-shaped light, which is steady or flashing:

The driver has the same obligations as when approaching a circular yellow traffic light.

(i) a light in the form of two (2) intersecting bars in the shape of “X,” which is located above a traffic lane on a roadway with more than two (2) lanes, separated by longitudinal markings:

If the light is red, you are not allowed to use this lane. If the light is green and displays a downward-pointing arrow, you are permitted to drive in that lane.

2. Traffic lights that display a bicycle, a bus, or another vehicle on the lights, or traffic signals that are smaller than standard size, with a rectangular sign on their pole indicating a specific vehicle, apply only to drivers of the respective vehicles.

3. Violations by the driver referred to in paragraphs 1 and 2 are classified in category E1-A, with the exception of subparagraphs (b), (e), (h), and (j) of paragraph 1, which are classified under category E4 and for which the offender is subject to an administrative fine of seven hundred (700) euros and the administrative measure of on-the-spot revocation of the driver’s license for sixty (60) days.
