Article 6
Signals and instructions given by traffic officers
1. Road users must immediately comply with the following instructions and signals given by traffic officers when they are directing traffic:
a) An arm raised vertically means: Caution; all road users from all directions must stop, except for drivers who cannot stop their vehicles immediately and safely. If this signal is displayed at an intersection, vehicles already in the intersection are not required to stop.
(b) An arm or arms extended horizontally means: a stop signal for all road users approaching from any direction that intersects perpendicularly with the direction indicated by the extended arm or arms. The traffic officer directing traffic may, after giving this signal, lower his arm or arms. This position likewise signals a stop for vehicles approaching from the front and from behind the traffic controller.
(c) A hand signal in a certain direction means: vehicles must move in the indicated direction.
(d) A flashing red light means: stop for those using the road toward which the light is directed.
2. Traffic officers may, when traffic conditions so require, direct vehicles to speed up or slow down, as well as stop or change the direction of vehicles or pedestrians.
3. The instructions and signals given by traffic officers who direct traffic take precedence over traffic lights, road signs, or road markings or symbols, as well as traffic rules in general. Traffic control by a traffic officer, contrary to the indications of traffic lights, is carried out only in exceptional cases involving special and emergency measures. If it is not possible, after prior notification by the traffic officer, to turn off the traffic lights, the above adjustment is made by signaling to road users, after the traffic officer has verified that this action does not pose a risk of accidents.
4. Traffic controllers, when directing traffic, must be clearly visible from a distance both at night and during the day.
5. This violation is classified as Category E2-B.
